Mechanic/Instructor - Part Time

Fantastic Days is an outdoor activity centre specialising in military vehicle driving activities for members of the public and corporate clients.

We are currently looking for an experienced mechanic for 1 - 2 days per week (hours flexible) to service and maintain our fleet of vehicles. This vacancy may suit a semi-retired or self-employed person looking for additional work. Extra hours are available if you are willing to take part in events as a driving instructor (training given).

Job Description

Your main work will involve the servicing and routine maintenance of our fleet of historic military vehicles (armoured cars, trucks and tracked vehicles) as well as other vehicles and equipment (e.g. hovercraft) and updating service records. (For major repairs, additional help will be contracted-in).

You will need to have a sound and wide-ranging mechanical expertise, though not necessarily with military vehicles - training given. You will need to be able to work with a level of autonomy and take responsibility for the upkeep of service and repair schedules. You will also be responsible for the control of stocks of service parts, fuels and oils. There may also be occasions to visit suppliers to select and collect parts, look over potential new vehicles etc and help with any other duties as required within the overall purpose of the job.

In addition to fleet maintenance, if you wish to work additional hours, you can help with events in the role of an activity instructor (i.e. showing customers how to drive the various vehicles) and helping out with other tasks on event days as they arise. This includes meeting and greeting customers and generally being attentive to their needs, so you will need to be polite and courteous and able to relate well with all sorts of people.

This is a varied job with further opportunities (if wanted) for the right candidate and requires a flexible person occasionally willing to work extended hours in order to meet a vehicle repair deadline.

Person specification & required skills

  • Sound and wide-ranging mechanical experience (essential); relevant qualifications a distinct advantage
  • Full driving licence, preferably clean (essential)
  • Happy to work extended hours on occasion to meet a deadline (essential)
  • Willing to drive and manoeuvre a wide range of vehicles and trailers (essential)
  • An interest in historic vehicles (advantageous)
  • Capable of identifying tasks and organising your own work schedule
  • Able to take responsibility for keeping the workshop well organised and tidy and all records up to date
  • A good communicator and team player, able to interact well with people on all levels
  • Highly conscientious and reliable

Please note: We operate a non-smoking environment across the whole of our site

Place of Work: Fantastic Days Activity Centre, near Thetford in Norfolk.

Remuneration: Pay rate subject to negotiation.
