The Hagglunds BV206 came into service in the early 1980's and is probably one of the most agile and versatile vehicles available. Built in Sweden and designed primarily for use in the Arctic, it is also happy in desert and other inhospitable terrain where use of a wheeled vehicle would prove impossible. The 'BV' is also fully amphibious, thanks to it's lightweight construction (GRP) and innovative hydraulic steering system. Propelled through the water using its tracks, the BV needs little or no preparation to enter and exit the water.
All four tracks of the vehicle are powered, the rear is connected to the front drive via a shaft which runs through the steering joint between the sections. This means it can climb some impressive inclines (up to 60 degrees!) and roll over to 'exciting' angles without getting into trouble.
The BV is in use with many forces around the world, including the Royal Marines. It is now being replaced by a newer vehicle, the BV206S 'Viking', designed around the same concept.
