Manufactured by what was Royal Ordnance (then Vickers) in Leeds, the Chieftain was developed in the late 1950's with initial production vehicles comlpeted in the early 1970's. Production continued through various marks until 1978. Chieftains were in use as Main Battle Tanks with the British Army until 1996 and saw action in the Gulf War of 1991. Engineer variants (Recovery, Bridging etc.) were still in service in the early 21st century, although most have now been replaced with variants of the Challenger 2 and Warrior.
